When searching for a lock for your residential garage door, you may get a little overwhelmed. There are many different types of locks to choose from. Besides the types, there are also different brands out there. How are you supposed to know which one is right for your garage door? There are a few ways to determine which is the perfect match for you. First, you will need to check what brand of garage door opener you have. You will also want to check the type and brand of alarm system and garage door type remotes you might have. After you have written all this down, you should then go to a large hardware store or a specialty store. There will most likely be a large section of different garage door locks. There are three locks that we especially recommend. They fit most garage doors, are excellent brands, and will last a lifetime. All of these locks have been recommended by law enforcement and security companies.
- Keyed Cylinder T-Handle Lock in Chrome: This type of lock is completely metal and is manufactured by Prime Line. It should be used together with a swivel lock handle or a locking hub. These can replace most T lock handles that you may already have. These locks are also great for mobile homes and recreational vehicles.
- Stanley Aluminum Deadbolt Lock and Key Cylinder: This type of deadbolt lock is perfect for doors with locking hubs. This lock can replace most overhead garage door locks. The great thing about this lock is that the key cylinder has a completely solid tumbler. The entire lock is made from metal. These parts include the mounting hardware, fasteners and plates.
- National Hardware deadbolt V7651 Garage Door Lock: This lock is a little different from most others available. First of all, it is an aluminum deadbolt. Secondly, it is resistant to burglar attacks. This is true because the lock cylinder is installed on the outside of the door while the body of the lock is actually installed on the inside of the door. This lock has a great chrome finish for a style. It is also a very light lock weighing only 0.75 pounds.
These are only three styles that we have found that work very well and look great. These are not the only types of locks on the market today. After you ensure that the locks you like work with your particular brand of garage door, you will then want to pick your perfect style. There are many different finishes, sizes, and weights. If you have any question, you can contact any hardware store in your area or a local Tacoma garage door professional.
